Traveler on The Appian Way

We went off for a drive today along the ancient Roman road, the Via Appia...

I sat up front to get a good view. Besides, Sally was bothering me in the back...

This is the ancient gate, The Porta San Sebastiano, which is in the Aurelian Walls of Rome. People still drive through the gate today, it's amazing!
There is still grafitti left etched into the gate...

This is of an angel and a Latin inscription which I couldn't read...

More Christian symbols...

Tha Appian Way was begun in 312 BC! It was one of the most important roads because it connected Rome to Southern Italy. As they say, "all roads lead to Rome", and in those days it was very true.
You can still see ruts where the chariot wheels traveled!

Another rut. It is just amazing to see this old road.
Along the road there are ancient Roman tombs and masoleums. There are statues also, like this one...
This Middle Ages house was actually built on top of a Roman masoleum. Someone still lives here to this day! That is a little bit creepy, but cool too!

I am having a great time exploring this amazing city.

Wow!! I must say, though, your new collar with the charms on is rather fab. I'm slightly jealous!
